What are the Cosmetology CE Requirements in Texas?
Cosmetologists seeking to renew their Cosmetology Licenses in the state of Texas MUST complete 4 hours of TDLR-approved continuing education every two years from an approved CE provider like Coursemax.
Required coursework must include:
- 1 hour in Sanitation (Mandatory)
- 3 hours in cosmetology related topics
For those who have held their licenses for at least 15 years, the only CE requirement is to complete a 1-hour Sanitation course. The additional three hours of continuing education will be waived and will not be required.

Who is required to complete Cosmetology continuing education courses for license renewal in Texas?
All licensed cosmetologists in the State of Texas MUST complete continuing education courses every two years in order to renew their licenses. The requirements apply to:

Do I need to take a test or quiz to complete my CE requirements?
No! We provide a stress-free learning curriculum with ABSOLUTELY NO tests or quizzes. You will only need to attest you have completed the required hours to satisfy TDLR's CE requirements for cosmetology license renewals.
Can I renew my license first and complete my CE requirements later?
No. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requires all license holders to complete their CE requirements prior to renewing a license. Failure to do so will only result in the delay of a license renewal.
What is TDLR's renewal window for Texas Cosmetologists?
TDLR’s renewal window opens 60 days prior to a license's expiration date. Around that time, TDLR will send a renewal notification to a license holder.
What happens if I miss my license renewal deadline?
Failure to complete the required Cosmetology Continuing Education (CE) course and renew your license on time will result in your license expiring, and you will need to pay additional fees to reactivate it. According to TDLR, offering cosmetology services for payment while your license is expired is illegal.

Do I need to keep copy of my certificate of completion?
Yes, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) suggests you keep your certificate of completed CE course for two years after the date of completion. This is incase TDLR requests to see your records to determine compliance as part of an inspection or investigation.
Is there a deadline to complete the course?
You should complete your required CE course as soon as possible, but no longer than your expiration date in order to remain compliant with the State of Texas.
How can I confirm that my completed CE course has been reported to the State of Texas?
After completing your course, we will send you a confirmation email within 24 hours, notifying you that your CE hours have been reported to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Please ensure you check your email inbox for this confirmation. Still don’t seen email — check your junk folder too!

Please allow up to 7 business days for your course completion to be posted on the TDLR site. If after the 7 business days you do not see your course completion reported, please contact our support team at support@coursemax.co.

How do I renew my Texas Cosmetology License?
You will need to first fulfill your CE requirements as mandated by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR). Once you have completed your required CE course and Coursemax has successfully reported your course completion to TDLR, you can begin the license renewal process by submitting your license renewal application to TDLR. Will I receive a certificate upon completion?
Yes, upon successful completion of the course, you will immediately receive a certificate of completion. You MUST download your certificate and keep for two years after the date of completion. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) may request to see your records to determine compliance, in the event of an audit.
Will Coursemax submit proof of my completed CEs to the State of Texas?
Absolutely! Coursemax will electronically submit your course completion report to TDLR within 24 hours of course completion. This expedited reporting service is provided at NO extra charge.
What is the renewal deadline for my license?
Your renewal deadline will be your license expiration date. You can find this printed in your physical license or you can search for your license on the TDLR website HERE.
Can I take a course in multiple sessions?
Yes, you can log in and out of the course as many times as needed. Your progress will be saved.
Is there a time limit to complete the course?
Each course has a timer to ensure course taker meets the required seat-time per TDLR requirements.
For every 1 CE hour, the total seat-time is 50 minutes, allowing for 10 minutes to be used for a break.
Let's look at a 4-hour course as an example. Your the total seat-time required is 3 hours and 20 minutes, since you will have a total of 40 minutes to be used for break time.
Where can I access my certificate of completion after completing the course?
Very easy! Simply hover on My Account on the homepage menu and select My Courses. Find your completed course and click on the certificate icon. Alternatively, you can visit the course page and click on the download certificate button.
Does my certificate of completion expire?
No, all Coursemax certificates of completion do not expire! The only expiration date you should keep in mind is your state license renewal.
Do I need to pay extra for expedited reporting to TDLR?
Nope! While TDLR allows a continuing education provider up to 7 days to report course completions, we typically report course completions within 24 hours. Many other CE providers upsell on 24 hour reporting, we do not. It's inclusive of the course price.
What is your refund policy?

I need to update some of my profile information, how can I access my account?
Very easy, simply hover over My Account on the home page menu and click on My Profile. This will bring up your account information where you can edit things like your name, email address change password and update all license information.
How do I create a Coursemax account?
Click on Register in the homepage menu to create an account. You will be prompted to provide a username of your choosing, name, email address and password. Alternatively, you can register after selecting a course where you will also be promoted to register and create a profile.
Can I register for a course as a guest?
No, an active account is required to take a course.
What payment methods are accepted for your courses?
We only accept credit card and debit card payments.
I forgot my username or password. What do I need to do to regain access?
We've all been there! To reset your password, simply click on the Forgot Your Password? link in the login page. You will then be prompted to enter either your email address or username to begin the reset. This will trigger an email sent to your registered email address asking you to provide a new password.
Can access my course from multiple computers?
Of course, all of our courses are accessible from any desktop computer, laptop, tablet and mobile phone.
